Saregama goes slow in acquiring new Bollywood tracks

Kolkata (PTI): Music company Saregama Ltd has become cautious in acquiring new Bollywood tracks as it felt the tracks had become 'expensive' compared to returns.

"We have gone slow in acquiring hindi music rights since the last two quarters in particular. Music rights have become very expensive while recovery does not match the rise in cost," Saregama Managing Director Subroto Chattopadhyay told PTI.

He felt the reason for sharp rise in prices of new Bollywood track was due to entry of new companies with deep pockets trying to make their presence felt.

He said prices were also high at Rs 7-8 crore for some tracks.

"We write-off the cost in the same accounting year though the right is for a very long term. Realisation in the same year and even in a few years do not match the cost," Chattopadhyay said.

However, he strongly felt that correction in prices was bound to come and the company would wait for the right time for new more economical Bollywood tracks.

"We are looking at new avenues which can be tapped like radio and telecom companies," Chattopadhya said.

He said that the company had kept focus on film production but declined to divulge any investment figure as it would depend on the projects.
