Indian movies need to be marketed well: MAMI trustee

Mumbai (PTI): Movies are also a product and like any other product they too need be marketed and sold well,a trustee of the Mumbai Academy of Moving Images said.

At the end of the day even movies are a product, therefore like any other product, they have to be sold or marketed well, both at the national and international level, MAMI trustee Sudhir Nandgaonkar said.

It has been observed that once a movie gets noticed at a film festival, it becomes easy to find a market for it abroad. Today there is a good potential for Indian movies in the European markets, the trustee noted.

Keeping this in mind, we had introduced the Indian Competition section five years ago, Nandgaonkar, who is also the Artistic Director of the ongoing film fest said.

Unfortunately, it is observed that the film makers do not take much interest in selling their movies abroad. Therefore, now we may revamp this section, but the basic aim of providing a platform to Indian movies at a global level would remain unchanged, he added.

But how different is MAMI from other fetivals which also give a platform to the movies?

"It is the jury," he replies.

"Our jury comprises mosty film experts and makers from foreign countries. Their view, their perception is devoid of any prejudice and therefore at times they can prove to be better judge of a movie here," Nandgaonkar added.

Besides two popular bollywood films, "Chak De India" and "Taare Zameen Par", in the Indian competition section, the remaining eight are by independent film makers.

The awards will be given on March, 13.
