World cinema undergoing a lot of change: Spanish filmmaker
Mumbai (PTI): At 75, when most people remain content with enjoying the twilight of their life, famous Spanish director Carlos Saura is working on his next movie.
So, when asked as to what keeps him going even at this age, pat came the reply, "curiosity. And more curiosity."
"There is so much that needs to be done, needs to be learned. Many stories are still untold. I make a movie which I like, I believe in. And I think, If I like it, at least two to three other people will also like it."
"And by the grace of God, this minuscule number will swell to two to three million and further. So, this way, I can achieve both, creative and commercial success from a movie," Carlos, who has made more than 40 critically acclaimed films and won over 40 Spanish and international awards, told PTI.
His latest venture is 'Fados', a film that has music as its central theme.
It is important for a filmmaker that his movie does well commercially also, he said. "Right now, the world cinema as a whole is undergoing a lot of change. There is a lot of confusion around. The themes are changing, the technique is changing, also the audience is changing," he said.
"So, making a movie today is much more difficult than it was earlier," said Carlos, who was in the city to receive the newly-constituted Global Lifetime Achievement Award by Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) at the international film festival that concluded here yesterday.
The man who has won Silver Bear in the Berlin Film Festival and special jury awards in Cannes, was asked if he has ever seen a Bollywood movie?
"I have seen only 10-12 Bollywood movies. There was a lot of songs, dance and emotions in them. I like emotions."
"But basically," he said, "I found all of them the same."
