Pak. film industry to celebrate 60 years

Islamabad (PTI): Pakistan's film industry is gearing up to celebrate six decades of existence by organising 60 days of non-stop celebrations in the country's cultural capital of Lahore.

The celebrations tipped to be the biggest ever in Pakistan -- will include the screening of Pakistani films, exhibition of film posters and other paraphernalia, a fashion week, musical concerts and award ceremonies.

The celebrations -- to be held at Alhamra Cultural Complex in the last week of April -- are aimed at reviving the fortunes of the film industry which has not being doing too well in the recent past.

"The top 60 Pakistani flicks, including Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto movies, have been selected to be screened for 60 consecutive days at the event. Many of these movies date back to the 1960s and 1970s and have been obtained after a tough struggle," Asian Cultural Association Pakistan general secretary Sohail Bokhari told the Daily Times.

The directors and producers of these old films, who have retired, had to be hunted down to get prints of their movies. "They have been invited to the show along with actors of that era," Bokhari said.

A three-day exhibition of film posters and other publicity materials has also been arranged. Rare posters and informative material about the film industry will be displayed. Every evening, a programme will be staged to pay tribute to legendary artists of the film industry.

A week long fashion show will showcase 60 years of fashion trends in films. Models will walk the ramp wearing a diverse range of clothing of the bygone era.

"It will be a mega show, featuring dance, music and live performances," Bokhari said. "The event will be the biggest in the history of the Pakistani film industry. We want the government to collaborate with us, as it is an attempt to boost and revive the film industry. If not, it (the government) should at least give us the cultural complex hall at utility charges," he said.
