Hindi films, TV soap operas a 'must' among Bhutanese

Thimphu (PTI): Bhutan's capital may have just one cinema that screens only Bhutanese language films all year round but Bollywood has been able to make its presence in the country, through VCDs and DVDs.

"I love watching Hindi movies. A couple of days after a film releases in India, we get its VCD and DVD copies," says taxi driver Ugen Penzang.

"We don't get to see Hindi movies in our halls as they are few in number," he says.

The Himalayan country has only seven cinemas.

"The most recent film I watched was 'Jodhaa Akbar'. Though it was okay, I liked 'Om Shanti Om' more," Penzang, who plies his taxi mostly on the Paro-Thimphu road, says.

But for Penzang's wife, Indian television soap operas matter the most.

"We get to watch some Indian entertainment and news channels. My wife is just addicted to the serials," he says.

"She almost watches all serials shown in Star Plus, Sony and Zee TV," Penzang says.

In most Bhutanese homes, life comes to a standstill in the evening as housewives devote over three hours watching television serials in Indian channels that are allowed to be aired in the country.

Pema Deki, who works in a government office, says she loves to watch Hindi movies that deal with family issues.
