The budding actor

A sprouting heart-throb.

WHO IS this charming young man? Doesn't he look familiar? Yep, you got that right. He is Kunal. Remember "Kadalar Dinam'' where he starred with the vivacious Sonali Bendre? And his latest movie, "Punnagai Desam'' is on show for the seventh successful week.

This soft-spoken Rajput basically belongs to Kashmir but settled in Mumbai. He is at the city to shoot for "Enge enathu kavithai'', starring opposite new face Rati and directed by Aravind (assistant of Kamal Hassan).

His dad being a Colonel, he too wanted to join the Army. "My Dad is at the border, just 20 kms away from Pakistan'', he says proudly. Even though he cleared his Army exams he is now into the film field. Thanks to Kathir and A. M. Rathnam who picked him up while he was walking across the Brigade Road in Bangalore for they thought that he could fit the bill.

After "Kadalar Dinam'' he did "Parvai onre podume'' with Monal. His upcoming movies: He has been doing quite a number of movies under the `Super Good Films' banner, "Arpudam'' with Anuprabha (Kannada heroine) , "Varsham ellam vasandam'' with Anita (Telugu heroine), "Nilavinile'' with Vijayalakshmi (Kannada heroine) and "Pesada kannum pesum'' with Monal (the same crew of "Parvai ondre podume''). He has two more offers in store, which are yet to be shot.

Speaking about the film "Enge enathu kavithai'', he says that almost all the sequences in the film are shot inside the city. Kovaipudur, Anjali Restaurant, Ashwini Hospital, Cheran Towers, State Bank of India....

Film as a profession: "It is a wonderful profession. You can reach out to lots of people. As I am not from a filmi background, I don't have any inhibitions about my roles. I take up the best. I am also flexible and can cater to the needs of the director.''

Why no Hindi movies: "I have been getting quite a lot of offers from Bollywood too but I would like to establish myself in the Tamil industry first. The shooting time for Hindi films are much longer when compared to Tamil. What is required is just a minimum of two and a half months for completing a Tamil film.''

``The movie which I am at present shooting is just a month and ten days old and is due for release on April 14. My working hours is a minimum of 12 hours a day. I had all the motivation I could get from my family's side. They supported me in all my endeavours''.

Love life? "Would you believe me if I say that I do not have a girl friend'', he says with a grin. " I never stick on to a place for long and hence I've not been trapped yet. Planning to get married only at 30. I wish to work and entertain people now. Even for the Valentine's Day I attended a college function in the evening and was back to my inn for a good dinner and a long sleep'', he says.

His favourite hero: Shahrukh Khan and Rajini Kant. Heroine: Kajol and Jyothika. His most coveted role: The role that Tom Hanks played in "Forrest Gump''. His Zodiac Sign: Aries (March 30). Hobbies: Horse riding, golf and playing polo. His dream: To become a polo player.

His fans: He has fans all over Tamil Nadu, Malaysia and Singapore. About the cotton city: A well planned city with not much of traffic. A lovely place with sweet and highly appreciative people. Will be visiting Ooty, the `Queen of Hills' shortly for a song sequence.
