Brain gain

IF YOU have got a great idea for a business, wait. You might just hit the jackpot on Wednesday because Shaastra's happening. IIT's annual fest, considered one of the biggest technical festivals in India, will host a variety of competitions including `Breakthrough'. Apt.

`Breakthrough', Shaastra's entrepreneurship-idea contest, has a tantalising track record — industries are known to pick brains here and some of the better ideas have been launched by incubators and venture capitalists. After all, Shaastra's a hunting ground for talent.

The mix of contests oscillate from the intellectual to the innovative. `Aavishkar' involves paper presentation on original research in engineering and management while `Blueprint' is a design contest on a range that includes earthquake resistant housing or just science-enhanced garments. Add new events like Project X, Ingenuer and a high-level programming contest to replace some wornout ones.

Or just go to the `Colosseum', a room for some hot multiplayer games or log on at http://shaastra.iitm.ac.in for Online Events.

On line are lectures by hotshots in person or through video- conferencing, including the head of Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, MIT, Mriganka Sur, and the head of Intelligent Systems division, Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, G. Athithan, who will be speaking on neural learning. Science fiction movies, workshops and lectures will add to the event, but the must-see will be the IAF's exhibition on missiles, cluster bombs and MiGs.

Go there for a dose of brain stimulant — on February 27.
