Shooting stars in real time

``Seven out of eight of my heroines have won awards. This time, it will probably be Sneha's turn to get an award,'' he smiles. The other heroine in the movie is a new face, Vassant adds.

Vassant likes to keep things realistic on the sets of ``Yay, Nee Romba...''
IT'S A lazy afternoon in February and lunch time for the unit of `Yay, Nee Romba Azhaga Irukkae' at TTK Road, Alwarpet. The location is an upper middle class house tucked away in between Suprageet preview theatre and Amravathi restaurant opposite Music Academy.
Trust director CTS Vassant (yes, that's how the man who helmed `Rhythm' likes to be known) likes to choose a realistic backdrop for his stories. ``I have a fascination for houses,'' he admits.
And he makes sure that they are houses that aren't seen before in the movies. After all sets can never give you the feeling of a home. And real `live' houses are more convincing than unoccupied houses that are usually let out for shooting.
The house in question is so real that you actually find people catching up with their regular soap during the lunch break.
Outside the house, the unit is sitting together, sharing lunch. Even the film's hero Shaam. Food is quite a leveller in the industry.
We start our chat with director Vassant who wanted to talk about his music directors, a bit late because of an inadvertent delay (no one told him). The unit by itself however, seemed to be quite disciplined. At least in sticking to a 1-2 p.m. for a lunch-time.
Referring to some notes he had made, ``I found a lot of talent in all those who had approached me. And you just need one `hook-song' as they call it a song like `Chinna Chinna Aasai' for A.R. Rahman or `Vaseegara' for Harris Jeyaraj to click for the music director to make it big. So I decided that I would give them a song each,'' Vassant recollects.
``It sounded like a novel idea. And there was the possibility that they will work and give in their best, at least for competitive reasons,'' he adds. ``So, at the end of it, I got five different styles of music''.
``When every song that you listen to in a tape is something different, you will not feel bored,'' claims the director.
As much as he is tight-lipped about the movie or what it is about, we dig deeper. Finally, he relents. ``It's a romantic film. It's an interesting film. And it has a message''. The director doesn't even bother adding a `different' tag to it.
Instead, he prefers to talk about his cast. ``Sneha and Shaam have shown a lot of interest. Both of them are the hottest stars in the industry and expectations from them are high. They have both done well,'' he says.
``Seven out of eight of my heroines have won awards. This time, it will probably be Sneha's turn to get an award,'' he smiles. The other heroine in the movie is a new face, he adds.
`Yay, Nee Romba Azhaga Irukkae' produced by G.V. Films is scheduled for release on May 5 after which Vassant will get busy with his next script `9-30 to 10'. He already has a bound script, he says.
Finally, we ask him to pose with the cast. And find that the director is at his job even if it was just a production still that was being shot. He was making sure that none of his actors were `posing'. Realism was his signature after all.
