Wild saree round.
THE MISS Cotton City show had to kick off by 5.30 p.m., but the tardy arrival of judges of the tinsel world (perhaps because of their hectic schedule) delayed the show a little.
As time rolled on, the CIT auditorium was getting closely packed. Cine star Kunal was the one to make his first entry. And the others followed. The crowd was squealing and whistling in excitement as if to welcome the film folks who entered the hall.
There were quite a lot of them on the judges' panel... Kunal, Aravind (director), Natasha (a super model from Bangalore), Pari (industrialist, also the son of former minister Pongalur.N.Palanisami), Sakthivel (trustee of the Hindusthan College of Arts and Science), Ashwini (Telugu film actress also the consort of director Arvind).
Shankar Subbu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Crime), was the chief guest. TVS Scooty being the main sponsors of the event, we had two slick Scootys on display on both the sides of the main stage. The show organised by Smitha Patel, proprietor, Disoni Event Management, started off with the traditional round .
The 18 contestants catwalked on the ramp dressed in `gagra cholis' and `lachas'. The maze of mirrors embedded in their dresses glittered in the bright focus lights of blue, red and yellow which went on and off. Smoke let out at definite intervals gave a feeling as though the whole event was happening up there in the sky amidst the clouds.
The work of the choreographers, Preety Jain and Prathiksha, was laudable not only because there was perfect co-ordination and orderliness among the contestants, but they also constantly encouraged them.
To fill the gap between the rounds was our good old `Disoni Excellency' dance troupe which hit the floor with scintillating jig for the song "Chandralekha'' from "Thiruda Thiruda''.
Next we had a Karoke play by ear performed by Maria, from Mangalore, who enthralled the audience, especially the youth, with her "Jara jara'' from "Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein''. Well... it is the Hindi version of the teen's favourite "Vaseegara''. The boys in the balcony were all up on their feet and were swaying their hands to and fro in appreciation (remember the "Mukkala Muqabala'' style?)
When we were over with all this, the contestants were ready in their breath-taking evening gowns. It is a misconception that black is a colour of mourning. Party wear gowns look smashing and gorgeous with a black background.
The red round.
For the party wear round, the contestants walked on the ramp with their black hep outfits that waved in the gentle breeze enticing the crowd. Gentle movements of hip swaying and the hand movements that they performed electrified the atmosphere. Giving them some time to prepare themselves for the "Wet and wild saree round'', we had another mind-blowing performance of the Disoni Excellency for the fast track "September Madham'' from "Alaipayuthe''. After which Maria gave us a melodious, soothing song which was a real break from the thunderous music with fast beats.
Then came the saree round with the damsels in plain sarees tied in various styles. The "Red'' round or the dream sequence round had all the contestants in red designer wears. This final round was for the judges to select the finest. Though there were a number of judges initially, there were just three towards the end. The others had to leave to shoot.
The question round was intended to check if beautiful girls had brains too! The contestants were stormed with questions by the comperes Sunil and Shwetha. Some of them were shrewd and confident while the others were anxious.
While the judges Natasha, Pari and Sakthivel were busy picking out the best out of the beautiful gals, we had a splendid performance by Sruthi, a five-year-old, who danced extraordinarily well for the song "Karuppu than enakku pidicha colouru''.
The sound of applause that she drew was much more than that of the contestants. Certificates were distributed to all the 18.
Miss Cotton City 2002 .
Then there was something which suddenly took us all by surprise... we saw the `to-be-models' sit on the Scooty and take a ride round the stage.
An ad for the Scooty it was meant to be probably. At last, it was time for the announcement and Lakshmi of Ramakrishna College was crowned Miss Cotton City.
First and second Runner Up: Sindu of VLB Janakiammal College and Kavita of Bishop Appasamy College.
