Embracing versatility

Eventful event.

COMET — 2002 the event was called. It was a one-day inter-collegiate programme organised by the Commerce Department Students (self-financing stream) of the American College, on March 8.

Event-packed programme it was what with the conduct of as many as 19 events on the same day. Quite a few programmes were held simultaneously. The student organisers had prepared the registration form in such a way that least impact was created for those desirous of participating in more events. Writing-oriented competitions were meant for the students who either felt shy or nervous due to the stage fear.

Perhaps, the students' desire to make the whole day purposefully entertaining was well served. The array of events read like this: `Paatukku paatu', quiz, art from waste, mono acting, solo singing, debate, crossword puzzle, what's the good word, creative writing in Tamil and English, turn coat, big bore, painting, cartooning, rangoli and poetry in English and Tamil.

Not just that. There were also what they called `mega' events like fashion show, light music, dance show, as u like it and ad act. Quite a striking feature indeed for a programme organised at the departmental level, say N. Rajesh Kumar, secretary of Comet and Ryan Rahul Raina, both final year B.Com students.

An intellectual purpose was attached to the mega events too. For instance, participants of the fashion show, consisting of traditional, formal and casual break-up, could not go away with their sashaying. They were also supposed to let out their intellectual beauty for a couple of minutes at the end. Likewise, invigilator-candidate and pedestrian-traffic police (act of bribing) dual role performance was the highlight of mono acting.

Students appear to have taken a liking for intellectual entertainment these days. For crossword puzzle, the organising students were caught unawares as a section of them wanted the competition in Tamil.

Again, the topics could bring the students' mind out of the campus realm. A few participants spoke with utmost ease about the topic `globalisation and economy'. Same was the case with the events — turncoat. The participants were given the topics on the spot. Creative writing competition enthused many students into participating.

The college auditorium wore a spruced up look for the annual event, which had the participation of Commerce students from nearly eight colleges. It was the idea of the organising committee to provide a cosmic backdrop to the stage, to augur with the nomenclature of the event.

The students spent nine hours to decorate the stage with thermocole designing.

For this they took the expertise and help of two architects, Salman and Vince, who were also magnanimous enough to provide the students with the required extent of thermocole.

It was a cause for delight for the students as well as the Head of the Department, A.S. Selvaraj.

Because the Principal, Samuel Sudananda, was so impressed with the ethereal ambience whipped up on the stage that he wanted to retain the decoration as a permanent feature of the auditorium.

The team from Thiagarajar College prevailed over the rest ultimately.
