Ayurvedic health care
Ayurvedic abhayangam.
FOR THE health conscious people who normally take a brisk walk or a jog in the bustling Race Course in the mornings and evenings, a new facility of Ayurvedic health care to rejuvenate them has come in place.
To give them another avenue of health care to keep themselves fit, "Krishna Ayurvedic Health Centre'' has come up in Race Course near the Cosmopolitan Club in association with the TEJAS Ayurvedic Trust, an associate of the Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (CBE) Ltd., known as AVP, which takes care of ayurvedic medicines, masseurs and the required expertise.
Sivaram, promoter of the centre, says that Ayurvedic health care is either not known or not available to many. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, came all the way to Kumarakom in Kerala on a holiday for Ayurvedic health care and the same is now available in Coimbatore. It was this health care which still keeps Kerala as a destination of tourists from India and abroad, in addition to the State's tourism potentials.
The centre envisages to give Ayurvedic health care to people to relieve them from stress, strain and pressures of modern day. For regular check-ups these centres could be utilised, if people were averse to the idea of hospitals.
The visitors are provided with a herbal welcome drink. They are first interviewed and a brief health check-up is done by an Ayurvedic physician who does the investigation. The constitution of the body called prakarithi is decided on the basis the composition of "vaadam, pitham and kabham." On knowing the problems of the visitor, the health care course is designed for him.
The basic treatment is an oil abhayangam done by trained masseurs. The oil is applied on the body for nearly 45 minutes purifying the body from toxic materials. The steam bath given after the special herbal abhayangam normally enters the openings in the skin and brings out all toxic materials. The table used for massage brought from Kerala has antique as well as medicinal value since they were made of trees with medicinal value. This herbal oil massage has, in fact, generated a heavy demand especially during the week-ends from the locals as well as those visiting Coimbatore, says Mr. Sivaram.
Besides abhayangams for normal health, there are special courses for specific ailments, says P. Shivaprasad, physician from the AVP Trust. The centre is equipped with a dispensary having all herbal medicines and expert druggists from the AVP.
The treatments and programmes basically help in weight reduction, skin and beauty care which are normally sought after by women who throng the centre.
Health care is available for spondylitis, sinusitis, rheumatic arthritis, stress management, counselling and meditation for hypertension/diabetes, rejuvenation and detoxification, low back pain, pre-natal and post-natal care, yoga and meditation, medicated steam bath and treatment for a host of other ailments.
The duration of treatment range from three, seven to 14 days.
The centre also offers half-a-day, full-day packages which include sessions on meditation, yoga and asanans for relieving the pressures of modern-day living.
