'Edutainment' for children

THIS SUMMER seems to be a major bonanza for children. Fair enough, because it is holiday time. So there should be something special for all those bubbly jumping beans out there. Recently, Titan came out with Dash watches, helping them give expression to their creativity, and now it is the turn of Doordarshan. The channel has come out with something new with a Bangalore touch.

Yes, children from Bangalore are all set to grip the national centre-stage. Timba Roocha, a serial for children premiered on Doordarshan national channel on Saturday, has a cast of six cute children from the City. The senior actors are from Kannada theatre. A majority of the members of the production team are also from Bangalore.

There is more of this local touch. The serial has been shot in and around Bangalore, with the filming of a few parts having been done at Sullia in Dakshina Kannada District. The talented children from the Ramana Maharshi Academy for Blind here have scored the title music.

Pradeep Pai, Executive Producer of the serial and CEO of Sudhee Networks, said it was innovative with the focus being "edutainment."

Each episode of the serial will have a bundle of surprises. It has a hi-tech 3D genie, which lives in a coy watch and not in his traditional home, Alladin's Chirag. The genie has an excellent sense of story telling, and helps children in character building, and inculcate in them family values. The stories have been derived from the Panchathantra and other folklore. All of them have been given a modern touch.

To appeal to the computer savvy young minds, the 26-episode serial has animations and computer graphics. Coupled with them are the elements of surprise and thrill.
