Design lessons

POOPED LOOKING at the same set of dresses on your shelf? Wished you had something new and unique to wear that will steal a look from those around, when you go to a party? Do you wish to be the object of envy?

How about designing your own garments, that suits your own style of dressing. Something, that's literally "tailormade" to suit your taste and look. A dekko at the national level designers contest that took place recently at Kumaraguru College of Technology and organised by the Apparel and Fashion Technology Division, Department of Textile Technology, was enough to provide an insight into the latest- trend setting garments in town.

The theme for the designer contest was "Wonders of the World'', in which nearly 66 students from ten colleges participated. The other themes of the show, revolved around food, wildlife, forces of nature, drapes, traditional arts and crafts, khadi and denim.

The show also provided some tips on how to look dashing and stunning, different from the ordinary.... by mixing and matching various pieces of garments, like for instance, a plain top would go down well with stripes or checks for the trousers.

You can have some garments like black trousers or skirts in your wardrobe and enhance it with colourful scarves, and stone studded brooches.

You can create different patches of fabric that are decorated with embroidery, fabric painting or patch work and you can attach these pieces of fabric on your garments.

But one must make sure that the fabric is in neutral colours like black, white or beige, so that it matches with most of your dresses.

Want a modern or traditional look? Get a detachable and `customised' collars and sleeves depending on the need and occasion you want to visit.

A Velcro strip can be fixed on them to give you an out-of-theordinary look, by attaching different combinations of collars and sleeves on the garment.

Strands of the yarn falling down loosely from the bottom of your trousers would give the garment a cool and casual look. A stone wash denim pant with a little of floral embroidery and fabric painting is also one of the most sought after pieces.
