Depths of depravity

HUMAN CRUELTY knows no bounds. Evident from the incident narrated by sources at the Udavum Karagal, a city-based charity home for the destitute and the orphaned. This reportedly happened to a 10-year-old boy, who was rescued by the organisation from the streets.

Gopi was playing out on the street with his friends, when a stranger reportedly approached and said his mother wanted him back home and hence Gopi was to accompany him. As he was walking in a darkened alley, the stranger pinned him down to the ground, and pierced his eyes with a spoke of a cycle wheel. He was later brought to Veppampattu and forced to beg on the streets.

When he refused, a man, later identified by the police as a ganja peddler, beat him up repeatedly. All this was done just to gain a few easy bucks by playing on the sympathy of the public. According to the founder of Udavum Karangal, S. Vidyakar, apart from physiological fall out on the boy, the incident has left Gopi's right eye permanently damaged. Have some of us lost our inherent sensitivity as human beings just to achieve our own ends? It's for us to decide.
