Then, now, and forever
Shahrukh Khan as Devadas.
A LOVE immortalised, even as it dies... A union celebrated, even as it breaks... A hero born, even as he is defeated...
Devadas was not just the most widely read story, it was also a story that lingered on... It had entailed a national movement in Indian literature, touching every heart.
Devadas, a Bengali novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, is a saga of an unfulfilled, self-destructive lover that touched the core of the heart like nothing ever had. Not surprisingly, the storyof Devadas attracted several filmmakers.
Starting with a silent version in 1928, Devadas went on to be filmed as many as nine times in various Indian languages, including two historic movies in Hindi and the dramatic imaging by Akkineni Naageswara Rao in Telugu.
In 1935, P.C.Barua starred in the title role in the Bengali version; in 1955 Dilip Kumar donned the role in a movie directed by the legendary Bimal Roy.
It was also an astute fact when it was said that the Devdas persona had become a ``mythological reference point for Hindi cinema.''
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a noted director in Hindi film industry, whose ``Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'', has received many adulations from the public and the critics alike, nowhas made a story close to his heart, Devdas with Shahrukh Khan in the lead, Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi, the gorgeous and kind-hearted courtesan, and Aishwarya Rai as ``Paro'', the childhood friend and the object of Devdas's eternal<243> love
All the wealth in the world held no meaning for Devdas, because all he craved for was love.
From family, from friends, from Paro... but he could never express it, and he never forgave himself for it, as it made him lose his Paro. The theme is the paradox of a man who was like a child, utterly lovable and yet rebellious.
He wanted love and intensely loved, and yet could not express both.
His unfulfilled love did not stop him from loving uncondition- ally... thus making his love immortal even though it destroyed him later in his life. Ultimately, Devdas is a story that projects emotion as its hero.
