More to colour than meets the eye

Why do people in the judicial profession wear black coats or gowns? What are the reasons for a doctor wearing green clothes in the operation theatre? Why did the Delhi Government ban Redline buses whereas in Mumbai every city bus is painted red? Why should a bride wear red clothes, a set of red bangles on her arm, lipstick, nail-polish and mehandi all in shades of red?

These are mind-boggling questions for a person of normal prudence because in science, colour is simply light of different wavelength. However, investigations into therapeutic use of colours have revealed that red produces feelings of arousal while blue generates feelings of tranquility. In 1958, Robert Gerard discovered that blood pressure increases under red light and decreases under blue light.

In 1990, scientists reported to the annual conference of the American Association for Advancement of Science on the successful use of blue light in the treatment of a wide variety of psychological problems. At the other end of the colour spectrum, red has been shown to be effective in the treatment of migraine, headache and cancer.

While colour preferences are innate for an individual, astrology offers a solution to the problem of colours encountered in daily life, feels Anil Kumar Jain, an astrologer. ''Wearing black clothes means all people connected with the judiciary are under the influence of the planet Saturn. By doing this, it is ensured that no undue haste is shown in judging a dispute and decisions are made only after taking due precaution in weighing all pros and cons of the subject matter,'' he reasons.

Astrologically, the colour green is assigned to the planet Mercury whose chief domain is over the mind and the intellect. ''A doctor while performing an operation has to maintain his nervous balance and cannot be too fast or too slow. Mercury bestows these qualities to a doctor in green dress who is expected to be calm and perfect.'' Similarly, red signifies the planet Mars which denotes energy, both constructive as well as destructive in the police, the defence forces and in transport. ''Without discipline, an individual can go berserk. Since there was no disciplinary agency to control Delhi's redlines which caused havoc on Delhi roads. However, Mumbai has a well organised fleet of red buses which is doing exceedingly well due to the highly disciplined driving on roads,'' says Mr. Jain.

In astrology, if red colour is handled with care its energy can be constructive. ''Due to these qualities of Mars, red is also a colour of celebration. A bride wears red clothes, a set of red bangles and everything else in shares of red as it signifies energy, ambition and success in the materialistic world and also the rich and colourful nature of married life.''
