Starry start

THE ACTIVITIES of the Kerala University Union for the current year had a colourfurl start. It was none other than the `mega star', Mammootty, who lighted the lamp to inaugurate the union's activities.

Himself an acivist during his student days at the Maharaja's College and later at the Law College in Ernakulam, it was but natural for Mammootty to advocate political activity on the campus.

For a citizen to exercise the right to vote in a fair and free manner in a democratic society, it is imperative that he or she learns the basics of politics in college, Mammootty feels. And he indulged in some loud thinking on this issue at the inaugural function.

What society badly needs is a generation of young men and women who believe that political activity is not an avocation, but a vehicle for social service, he opined in the presence of poet Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan.
