REFORM. THAT is the magical word these days and even religious scholars seem to be aware of it.
The 16th All-India Muslim Personal Law Board held on the city outskirts on the weekend was a keenly watched affair and the newly-elected president, Moulana Mohammad Rabey Hasni Nadvi, gave a clarion call for reform of the community.
A distorted image of Islam was being portrayed and therefore Muslims should forge cordial ties with other communities and give a correct picture of their religion through their conduct, he reasoned.
Islamic scholars from all over the country took stock of the problems and prospects facing the minority community.
Madrasa education, purdah, shariat and so on were on the agenda with the board asking Muslims to strictly follow shariat in personal and family matters and not approach courts.
It took the State Government head-on on the issue of registration of marriages stating that Muslims already get their marriages registered by qazis.
And, therefore no need to register marriages as per the new Act waiting for the Governor's assent.
