Special memories

BHARATH RATNA and in all likelihood the next President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has a special affinity with the city having spent a decade heading the defence research labs and giving shape to the missile technology.

Many are aware of this aspect but a few might have known that this relationship is something `beyond happiness' to the famous scientist.

When the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, requested Kalam to stay in Hyderabad, the latter replied his "heart will always be here.'' During his address to Indian School of Business students, Kalam revealed that he had spent the previous day at the Research Centre Immarat, a key defence unit, which he helped establish, and was ruminating over the message he wanted to deliver.

It was then that he thought of a few scientific breakthroughs - spin-off from the missile technology - he was involved in while working here which brought cheer to the common people. One was the lightweight calipers to the polio-affected and another was Kalam-Raju stent. These developments make the great man more than happy.
