The rustic way

YOU CALL them innocent or outspoken. Villagers, especially rural women, speak out their heart, even if the person standing before them is a Minister.

This is what happened on Tuesday at Manalmettupatti, near Melur. The Local Administration Minister, C. Durairaj, during a visit, enquired with women as to whether they were satisfied with the newly sunk hand pump.

They expressed their gratitude to him. Suddenly, a woman, in her late thirties, who introduced herself as having worked as a labourer to construct the platform around the hand pump, complained that the contractor owed her Rs. 60 for the work she had done. Even as the Minister tried to handover the amount, the contractor paid her. For this woman, the visit of the Minister was personally fruitful.

The rural mass gave a rousing welcome to Mr. Durairaj with crackers, `thalam and tappattai', shawls and `arthis'. The Minister's convoy had not less than a fleet of 20 vehicles. Probably, partymen wanted to return the villagers' reverence with a `visual grandeur' of zooming sumos.
