DO LIONS and tigers eat plants, vegetables and fruits? Does the elephant eat non-vegetarian food to remain strong? These were the questions posed to the villagers who thronged the Janagai Mariamman Temple in Sholavandan on the occasion of the annual festival on Tuesday.
The answer for both the questions was a sure `no'. Still the rustics were at a loss to explain why they continued to consume non-vegetarian food.
The `animal rights campaign', organised by the `Power Project', an NGO, might not have proved to be an instant success. Still it provided some food for thought. The volunteers of the organisation made the villagers realise how hollow was the argument that meat provided strength.
In the food cycle, the human being, who was eating into both the plant and animal kingdom, was an aberration.
There were some positive pointers too in favour of vegetarian diet. One can overcome common allergies and other ailments by abstaining from non-vegetarian food.
Pamphlets containing these points were distributed to them. The ultimate objective of the campaign was to prevent slaughter of animals for man's food.
