Celebrations begin
THE DISTRICT Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has decided to give it a go. Onam being the season of celebrations, a week-long indulgence in encouraging traditional art forms as well as a traditional beauty contest won't be out place.
The celebrations are being organised jointly by the DTPC and Southern Innovations Entertainment Company.
The show got off today with the Tourism Minister, K.V. Thomas, and the chairperson of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, Padmaja Venugopal, lighting the lamp to mark an auspicious beginning. This may well become a permanent feature of Onam celebrations in Kochi in the future. The celebrations have been planned in such a way that there is participation from all the local bodies in the district.
The celebrations are being directly linked to various local bodies _ the Kochi Corporation, municipalities and panchayats in the district, clubs, residential associations, Government organisations, reputed companies and educational institutions will be involved in the competitions.
On the opening day at the Maharaja's College auditorium, the competitions included the laying of floral decorations, a colourful past-time during the Onam season.
There will be a whole range of competitions unfolding during the week. These include `meesha', `kudavayar' and `kashandi' competitions.
Along with these, there will be a smiling competition as well as `pulikali' and `kalaripayattu'.
In keeping with the trends, there will also be a competition to choose the traditional Mr. Kerala and Ms. Kerala. They will be chosen from among those who can speak Malayalam and to ensure this, there will be a quiz.
