Another women-oriented serial

Poonam Dhillon as Manju in "Kittie Party", a serial that was premiered on Monday on Zee TV.

The term "Kittie Party'' conjures up instant images of a gossipy and malicious group of well-heeled women playing havoc in the lives of people in and out of their social circle. However, a kittie party also functions as a meeting ground that offers both emotional and psychological support to women who may not have another outlet for self-expression.

``Kittie Party'' is the latest serial to roll under the banner of Zee Telefilms and the third project in which writer Shobha De and screenplay writer Vinod Ranganath have collaborated. Together they have written a number of screenplays for popular soaps in Doordarshan like "Swabhimaan'' and "Sukanya''.

A well-known screenplay writer, 36-year-old Ranganath has branched out to writing screenplay for films and is presently writing one for an under-production film titled "Ishq Vishq Pyaar Vyaar''. As the title suggests, "Kittie Party'' is a serial that revolves around the lives of eight women who meet every month. Their individual lives and loves, lifestyles and priorities are explored through the serial, which goes on the air from Monday onwards.

Directed by Tamara P. Nadungadi, who has had the privilege of assisting Renu Saluja on various projects like "Maya Memsaab'' and "Sardar Patel'', "Kittie Party'' is once again a woman-oriented serial boasting of such big names as Poonam Dhillon, Maya Alagh and Kavita Kapoor. A well-known actress of earlier years, Poonam plays the role of Manju, who is the convener of the kittie and the brain behind all the remaining seven coming together.

While Kavita Kapoor essays the role of Rewa, the first love of the husband of Poonam's character, Maya Alagh plays Vidya who is an emotional anchor to women in the kittie. "Since the situations are a slice of everyday life, we are confident that the audience will be able to identify with the characters and conflicts they deal with,'' assert the promoters of this new serial.

While the audience response will be known only after some time, director Tamara Nadungadi and screenplay writer Ranganath are now exploring a collaboration beyond kittie parties. And the man who is bringing the two together for his next film is none other than Ram Gopal Varma who turns producer while Tamara dons the mantle of the director. Ranganath will be its screenplay writer. Its name? Well, keep guessing....
