Miniature wonder
Small and beautiful, Bonsai plants will surely wow you.
Cute, colourful and eye-catching. They are sure to transform a dull and lifeless room into a vibrant one. That's Bonsai for you.
Welcome to the wonderful miniature world of plants. Expensive though they may be to the common man, they sure are worth it. For all those who want to have a garden, but could not for sheer lack of space in a concrete jungle, Bonsai is the answer.
``It's nature and its fantastic creations in miniature. Down to the minutest detail,'' says Pushpa Jaywant, founder of the 20-year-old Friends Bonsai Society in the twin cities. Time and again, the society has been coming up with exhibitions to show, or rather, wow the people with the beauty of Bonsai and improve awareness levels in people. Those interested may contact her over the phone number 27112492 or its current president, Mangala Rao, over the number 27633032.
One such exhibition, with a sale attached this time, was held at the Sri Nagar Colony Ladies' Club for three full days. Mangala Rao says this was the second time a sale was organised. And the response was good. The heat and interest generated by the presence of dozens of varieties of flowering, fruit and foliage plants, all in Bonsai, was to be seen and experienced.
The containers in stoneware and ceramic, brought specially from Mumbai by B.R. Pandit, a well-known artist, were also of interest. So were the PVC containers, covered with a mixture of sawdust and other chemicals, put up by M. Shobha Rani and Kanchana. The containers were as colourful as the plants themselves.
The flowering varieties included the pink adinium, hibiscus in white and pink, bogunvilla in white, orange and mauve and the tiko mania. The foliage varieties included the ficus panda, ficus banyan, ficus blue island, ficus nuda, ficus benjamina and ficus nerefolia.
The fruit-bearing plants were mango, sapota, orange, cherries and the natel plums. Ripe for the picking? Doesn't that sound yum? Of course it would. But these plums are definitely not for the plucking. They look good on plants only. The popular saying certainly can't be wrong. As the Hyderabadi would say, `Ismall... oops ... Small is beautiful'.
