M&B, The next generation
MILLS AND BOON is going mod says a report in the London newspaper, The Independent. Following the success of "chick-lit" in books such as The Diary of Bridget Jones, it dawned on "product managers" (as such publishers call themselves in moments of truth) at Mills and Boon that women "demand longer, witty and irreverent novels. They want to see their own lives, in all messy detail, reflected in their fiction."
For 70 years at Mills and Boon the story of a girl triumphing over machinating Other Women, circumstances, etc. and getting her tall dark stranger in the end has resulted in sales of over 175 million annually. Apparently women today, seeing their own lives going down the kitchen sink, aren't turned on by happy stories. For this unimaginative new generation that cannot take refuge in fairy tales, there will be a new M & B series awkwardly titled Red Dress Ink. The older series will continue for those who can do without reality.
