To Ujjayini

As heaven rises like the craze for pleasure,

the moonlight blooms beyond it like the serenity

that descends when all desires subside. Upon whose

head compassion that dissolves as Ganga, and the ember

that consumes ego rest alike; in what radiance's

particle does the sky fall asleep; in whose

throat does poison rest as ambrosia —

that Mahakala's temple is here. And presently

the bells toll the morning puja.

His steps hasten towards that presence.

Climbing each step playfully like a child

he stands with joined palms in front

Of that Father of the Universe

his eyes half-closed, the hymn

`Ya srushti srushturaadya... ' on his lips

well sung in an engaging pitch!

He sees with his inner eye

the Supreme Being controlling the universe,

the sky serving as his ceremonial umbrella!

(Chapter 7, l.25-43, p.63)
