Academic cocktail

POMPOSITY and academics are often inseparable, like Tabasco in a Bloody Mary.

Evam, a new journal, is subtitled: "forum on Indian representations". Naively, I thought the italicised "re" was a graphic designer's trick before coming upon the editorial statement that the magazine aimed to "recover new ground". Despite being thus reminded that you are in the company of the learned, do read on. It is an eclectic mix. For the general audience there is an essay on how English, August turned from a novel into a film, its final screenplay, and an entertaining piece by Kiran Nagarkar on director Dev Benegal. But the journal is centrally a scholarly one: Michael Fisher, Jeffrey Kripal, Dipesh Chakravarty and other stellar names from academia have serious pieces here. Evam, edited by Makarand Paranjpe, Samvad India Foundation.
