Returning home

Back to basics... Anupam Kher.

IN a sense he returns to the womb. Taking over as Chairman of the National School of Drama (NSD), film actor, Anupam Kher is going back after 22 years to his alma mater. Having honed his acting skills in the NSD repertory, Kher is an insider who at once knows the shortfalls as well as the pluses that the institute has to offer. He isn't wearing blinkers while taking on the challenges, though he says he is positive that he will be able to get back the NSD to where it once belonged — one of the better known academies in Asia. ``It is one of the best institutes in Asia. But its energy levels seem to have gone down over the years. It seems to have lost its objective somewhere,'' said Kher in an interview after taking over. He certainly has some plans worked out to review the NSD but the main one pertaining to its finances remains elusive. Said Kher, not unduly distressed with this, that he would have to think out a coherent and cogent strategy. Of course his agenda is to make theatre ``self sufficient''. He also felt there was a need to widen the horizons of the NSD since much had changed in the theatre scene itself and the job of an institute, like the NSD, was to keep pace with the changing times. To those who felt that Kher might not be able to do full justice to his appointment here keeping in mind his film schedules, he said that he would have enough time on his hands after working to be able to make sure that he gave off his best.
