A Pointer
Maharani Gayatri Devi
IT was by chance that he laid his hands upon the portraits of Indian royalty that left him wondering. So James Stevenson, photographic manager at the Victoria and Albert museum, decided to pull out these photographs which depicted Indian royalty, actors, aristocracy that was visiting India at a time. The perfect time coincided with the launch of Roli books', The Lafayette Studio and Princely India which was inaugurated by Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur, one of the most photographed royals of her time. While onlookers commented on the exquisite quality of the photographs and the sense of nostalgia that it brought about, Stevenson, the man who coordinated all this was fairly satisfied with the results. According to him, these pictures threw light on the level of society in Britain at the turn of the century.
