Essence of Islam


M.J. Akbar

POST-SEPTEMBER 11 and there have been a variety of questions that have risen on the nature of history and religion. The release recently of M.J. Akbar's new book The Shade of Swords: Jehad and the Conflict between Islam and Christianity examines not just these ideas but also its relevance to historical experiences which Akbar believes are essential to our times. Akbar said that he was trying to present what happened through an objective perspective. It took Akbar ten years of research to put together this extensive book. At a discussion on the launch of the book, the Pakistani High Commissioner, Ashraf Jehangir Quazi remarked that it was the right time to clear centuries old notions on Islam, many of which were not in the right spirit.
