Buddhist treasures

THE "Sacred Treasures of Mount Koya: The Art of Japanese Shingon Buddhism" is a major exhibition of rare cultural treasures from Mount Koya. For the first time these treasures will be shown outside of Japan. The Honolulu Academy of Arts will be the exclusive venue for this display of esoteric Shingon Buddhist objects from September through November 10, 2002.

"Sacred Treasures" consists of 91 samples of paintings, sculptures, textiles and printed works dating from the Heian to the Showa periods. Divided into five distinct sections, each portion emphasises different aspects of Shingon Buddhism. As the introduction to the show, a recreation of a Shingon Buddhist altar will help visitors understand the setting and the ritual implements employed in Japanese Shingon practice. The academy plans to augment its presentation of "Sacred Treasures" with a variety of activities including traditional Japanese craft demonstrations, lectures, films, and other educational events. Over 2,000 visitors from Japan will travel to Hawaii, to see the show. The academy is working in association with the Reihokan Museum at Mount Koya to organise and sponsor the exhibition. Additional support is being provided by the University of Hawaii (UH), School of Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Studies, the University of Hawaii, Department of Religious Studies, and the Shingon Mission of Hawaii. The exhibition is being presented in honour of the Academy's 75th anniversary and the centennial of the Hawaii Shingon Mission. An international symposium, Matrices and Weavings: Expressions of Shingon Buddhism in Japanese Culture and Society, is also being sponsored by the UH in conjunction with the exhibition.
