Inhale and exhale

LAURIE BAUM

A CONTINUOUS unbroken chain of planets in Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius dominates the January skies. Venus and Mars begin the month in Scorpio and then join Pluto in Sagittarius. The Sun and Mercury careen through Capricorn until January 20, when the Sun joins Neptune and Uranus in Aquarius.

Only Jupiter in Leo and Saturn in Gemini are outside of the four-constellation bowl pattern, forming a two-handled celestial bucket that will not be visible to the naked eye, but will be intensely palpable in human affairs. The impact of this celestial formation is to highlight the expansion of Jupiter and the contraction of Saturn in relationship to Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius. While the action of Jupiter and Saturn may seem contradictory, they represent a balance between the continually expansive and contractive forces that naturally dance in this dualistic universe.

Jupiter is like the in-breath. It represents an opportunity to take in all that is necessary and vital to help expand your capacity. Saturn is like the out-breath representing the chance to let go of everything unnecessary so you may assimilate and come back to a point of rest. The expansive Jupiter is naturally related to the energy of Sagittarius while the contractive energy is naturally related to the subsequent sign of Capricorn.

Bracketed by Scorpio and Aquarius, each constellation from Scorpio to Aquarius represents an important step in the evolution of nature's continual drama of expansion and contraction. Meditate on this concept and apply their infinite logic to your daily life. In addition, each sign will have a special relationship to the energies of Jupiter in Leo and Saturn in Gemini.

If you are an Aries, you will prefer the expansive energy of Jupiter to the disciplined energy of Saturn. As a Taurus, you favour the predictable and organised side of Saturn to the freewheeling nature of Jupiter. As a Gemini, you embrace the large and open quality of Jupiter, especially in Leo, but tend to become uncomfortable under the focused energy of Saturn, especially when its in your own sign until June 2003, when it moves into Cancer. As a Cancer, you actually like neither Jupiter nor Saturn, because you dislike change, which both planets engender. It is best to do both in moderation so your life does not become too polarised.

As a Leo, you instinctively prefer the robust energy of Jupiter, particularly when it is in Leo, as it will be until August 2003, when it moves into Virgo. The structured energy of Saturn defies your nature to an extent, but you are able to adapt to it, especially when you are the boss. As a Virgo, you tend to shy away from the unrestricted energy of Jupiter in favour of the more conservative, organised and coherent energy of Saturn. When Jupiter moves into Virgo in August 2003, you will have an opportunity to expand in methodical ways. As a Libra, you are so balanced you can adapt to both. As a Scorpio, you are independent and strong-willed, and prefer to march to the beat of your own drummer.

As a Sagittarian, you are comfortable with the optimistic, playful energy of your planetary ruler, Jupiter, and only mildly tolerant of the karmic discipline meted out by Saturn. But you are able to find the perfection even in Saturn's chiding. As a Capricorn, you are a little suspicious of Jupiter's undisciplined style and prefer the logic and order of your planetary ruler, Saturn. As an Aquarian, you have mastered the art of objective observation, and are equally comfortable with both. As a Pisces, your planetary ruler is Neptune, god of the oceans. You prefer to expand to as great an extent possible. The law and order of Saturn defy your nature.

Also note that Mercury turns retrograde on January 2, at 18:13 GMT and will remain thus for three weeks, until January 23 at 1:03 GMT. This will give you time to review and organise your paperwork. Venus enters Sagittarius on January 7 and conjoins Pluto in the Sign of the Archer on January 26, forcing you to confront ideological differences with a loved one. A potent square between unpredictable Uranus and ambitious Mars in Scorpio on January 12 will bring unexpected turns of events. Mars then joins the planet of love in optimistic Sagittarius on January 17, bringing peace and harmony to an otherwise conflictual situation. The Sun leaves hard-working Capricorn and enters friendly Aquarius on January 20.

Other important celestial events to watch for in 2003 include the Jupiter-Neptune oppositions of February 16 and June 3, which will heighten spirituality and compassion, and the Jupiter-Uranus opposition on August 30, which will inspire creativity and invention. Saturn turns direct in Gemini on February 22 and enters Cancer on June 4, where it will remain until July 2005. Saturn in Gemini forced the collective to deal with issues of information, communications, travel and truth.

Saturn in Cancer will force everyone to look at family values, parental responsibility and the imperative that corporations, governments and large organisations treat citizens and employees fairly. Uranus enters Pisces on March 10 for the first time since 1928. Uranus in Pisces prompts people to pursue dreams and to open to altered states of awareness.

Uranus will remain in the transcendental Sign of the Fish until March 2011. Uranus in Aquarius from 1996 to 2003 helped people experiment with connecting electronically. Next, Pluto turns retrograde in Sagittarius on March 22 while Jupiter turns direct in Leo on April 4.Then the North Node of the Moon, representing collective destiny, enters Taurus on April 14, where it will remain until December 2004, when it moves backwards to Aries. Under the influence of the North Node in Taurus, we will deal with sharing global resources, the environment and the economy. Mercury will be retrograde in Taurus from April 26 to May 20. And Neptune will be retrograde in Aquarius from May 15 to October 22, while Uranus will be retrograde in Aquarius from June 7 to November 8, and Saturn retrogrades from October 25 until March 7, 2004. Mars, planet of action, retrogrades in dreamy Pisces from July 29 to September 27, creating the feeling that you may take a respite from reality, while Mercury retrogrades in Virgo from August 28 to September 20. Finally, Uranus returns to Aquarius for a brief sojourn from September 15 to December 30, and the last Mercury retrograde of 2003 occurs in Capricorn and Sagittarius from December 17 to January 6, 2004.
