A narrow escape

HE came here looking forward to tasting some delectable cuisine. Unfortunately, hit by the Delhi belly, Edwin Moses, former Olympic champion, couldn't do justice to that. But that did not stop the legend from attending the many programmes lined up for him.

Despite this being his very first trip to the country, Moses said that he saw India as a "very beautiful country with a great culture".

However he was not all that full of praise for Indian athletes who he felt had a long way to go. It was constant competition that gave an edge to athletes in the US he said and added that "India needed to have role models and intense competition at every level".

Moses said that he was in good shape even at 48 because he stuck to a rigorous schedule specially doing a lot of stretching exercises. "In my career spanning 14 years I have had just one or two injuries."

Moses said he admired Muhammad Ali not only because he was one of the finest boxers but also because of his immense contribution to society.
