THEATRE Club presents one of Poile Sengupta's most gripping and relevant plays. "Thus Spake Soorpanakha, So Said Shakuni" is a face-off (in more ways than one) between two minor characters from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The ingenious script features a man and a woman waiting in an airport for a delayed flight, and as they alternately take on two different avatars, myth and modern history coalesce into a sparkling cocktail. The racy, hour-long play explores power, revenge, sexual behaviour, and the nature of evil. With excellent performances from Rubi Chakravarthi and Anil Abraham, the play is jointly directed by Abhijit Sengupta and the playwright herself. May 11 and 12 at 7.30 p.m. at Yavanika auditorium, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road. Tickets Rs 125 at all Java City outlets and at the venue an hour before show time.

ALLIANCE FRANCAISE and the Embassy of France in India present "The Credo Collection" from Baba Anand. The 42-year-old Kashmiri who moved from fashion design to painting is a self-taught artist now settled in France. Following on from the themes of his earlier shows entitled "Kitsch Kitsch Hota Hai" and "Bollywood Show", these richly textured paintings on film posters and religious icon lithographs capture a kitsch spirit. At the same time they reflect his delving into the spiritual world. May 16-27 at the Alliance Francaise.
