THE literati are going to miss American diplomat John Cosmos Aller, who is leaving for Washington in August. Jake, as he is fondly known, and Janet Fine, COHO founder are looking for a volunteer or two to step forward and continue to help coordinate the poetry side of the Coho events. If you're interested, please let them know.

COHO is also going to publish an anthology of COHO poems. Copies of the best poems read at a COHO event and a short bio may be sent to Jake not later than the end of the month.

Jake will put them together and send the collection to the publisher. Once the book is published Jake and Jan will try to get it on Amazon so you can book it anywhere in the world.

THE Company Theatre, in collaboration with the British Council and Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, has organised an international conference for November 2003 in Mumbai. "SEARCHES for Extraterrestrial Life" is the title of a talk on June 19, 4 p.m. at the British Council auditorium by Professor Jayant Narlikar. It focuses on the scientific approaches towards finding whether we are the only living creatures in the universe. Books from the Science and Technology collection of the BC Library will also be on display.

POET and painter Gieve Patel will read from his three collections of verse: Poems (1966); How Do You Withstand Body (1976); and Mirrored, Mirroring (1991) on Thursday, June 19, 6.30 p.m. in the NCPA Audio Visual Room. This is a Chauraha presentation.

Dr. Patel will trace some recurring themes in these books: the City, the human body, violence, Nature and spiritual aspiration. In so doing, he will also relate the way the poems came into being.

The reading will be followed by a discussion moderated by the poet, art curator and journalist Ranjit Hoskote.
