"BE-JEWELLED", an ethnic mela showcasing traditional non-precious jewellery purports to celebrate the passion for jewellery harboured by every Indian woman. Diverse forms of jewellery and jewel craft will be displayed here from all corners of India including Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Orissa, West Bengal and the states of the North East. The mela is on at the Meena Bazaar of Kolkata's open-air heritage centre, Swabhumi every Sunday till July 31.

"AMERICAN CHAI" a fun-filled film for young people and aptly sub-titled a "non-traditional brew" will be launched in Kolkata on June 18. Oxford Bookstore and Gallery is hosting the event - titled "American Chai Unplugged" - in collaboration with Oxford Bookstore Cha Bar, The Park and The Record Music Magazine. The film, a Shringar Films and Magic Lamp release, is a musical featuring Aalok Mehta, Sheetal Sheth and Anurag Mehta in leading roles. They will be present at the launch and the event will include an hour of live music led by Aalok Mehta who plays a singer in the film. The evening promises to be an entertaining storm in the tea cup, including a venue shift, as after the music bash at Oxford the party will move to The Park where the show will go on!

IN a bid to promote awareness about the rich traditional heritage of the East, The Eastern Zone Cultural Centre has organised the screenings of a series of films every Friday and Saturday till the end June at its Salt Lake centre. On June 20, two films will be screened: one on the folk instruments of Bengal (such as the exquisite, iconic ektara of the Baul singers) and another on the Kalighata Pata Paintings the striking scroll paintings executed in natural hues traditionally used to relate topical events within a folk framework. On June 21 one can learn about Adivasi Putul Katha (the puppet art of Adivasis) and also view some of the magnificent archaeological monuments of Malda district in northern West Bengal.
