Kolkata

SEX and the city: the title of the famous American soap may well be the best way of describing Kolkata this week as the city gets a mega-dose of the birds and the bees with a series of major events organised by Oxford Bookstore and Gallery as part of its Kama Sutra promo. On June 23, film director Ashok Vishwanathan moderates "Sexplicity: Modern Day Sexual Mores", a discussion between such high-powered personalities as dancer Priti Patel, tabla exponent Bikram Ghosh, PR consultant Rita and hubby sports writer and commentator, Kishore Bhimani and psychiatrist Dr. Reema Mukherji. The buzz continues on June 25 with an event for Generation Next titled "The Kama Sutra: Sex Education Manual or Taboo Text?" This two-part event will consist first of a closed-door discussion exclusively conducted by and for young people and the outcomes will then be presented to a public forum including a panel consisting of actress Konkona Sen Sharma, designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh and ad-person Meera Kakkar.

THEY may have built themselves "a stairway to heaven" but did that hard rock group of the 1960s Led Zeppelin really invent heavy metal music or are they the great pretenders? Decide for yourself on June 27 at the Rooftop on a programme dedicated to those bad boys of rock. Organised by Srijan as part of its "Music from Distant Shores" series — a series dedicated to 1960s music — the evening will include an audio-visual show by Sumit Roy, cover versions of the group's songs by local band Marooned.

IS censorship justified? Is it an infringement of a fundamental right? Does the government have a right to dictate what we want to read, see or hear? If you feel strongly about the issue then be sure to participate in Oxford's highly charged discussion on "Censorship in Films, Books, Advertising and the Net". Slated for June 28 this no-holds barred debate will feature panellists like actor Jayant Kripalani, dramaturg and former Censorship Board member Samik Bandhopadhyaya and British Council Eastern Region Director, Sujata Sen.

ON June 20 and June 21, Spandan presents a two-day music festival. Day One sees "Ghazal ka Safar" — a performance by Seema Anil Sehgal popularly known as the Nightingale of Jammu and Kashmir at Gyan Manch. Day Two features "When East Meets West" at the GD Birla Sabhaghar — a unique musical collaboration between Rabindra Sangeet exponent Pramita Mallik and Lee-Alison Sibley (wife of the U.S. Consul General) with performances of Tagore's songs and songs of love and peace by the likes of Pete Seeger. The Calcutta Foundation Orchestra will accompany the duo.
