MATHEMATICS as visual art: that's the appeal of fractals. "A Fractal World", an exhibition inaugurated by fractal maths expert Professor Marguerite Flexor, makes clear to the layperson "this new way of apprehending irregularity". Simple geometric figures are not often found in nature; it mostly offers us branched, jagged, and seemingly disorderly structures that pose a challenge to geometry. This challenge was taken up by the fractal approach, a concept introduced by French mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot during the 1970s. Fractals not only entered various scientific and technical domains but presented shapes that attracted artists. The interactive exhibition, designed and produced by the EcoutezVoir Association, includes games on video, films, and walk-through installations. At the Atrium, Alliance Française, till June 28 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
