SHADOW puppeteers are the original entertainers. Today this form of theatre is a dying. Thus the news of a Festival of Shadow Puppet Theatre "Nee Engey" is something to cheer about. Presented by R.V. Ramani and Kalai Foundation, this three-day event comprises film shows, performances by nine groups and workshops. The programme today (July 13) at the Alliance Française Auditorium has a screening of "Nee Engey" a documentary film by R.V. Ramani on the shadow puppeteers living in South India. The afternoon (2.00 p.m.) sees the inauguration of the performances that goes on until 7.00 p.m. The main performers are: A. Murugan Rao and party from Madurai, Nagesh Rao and party from Kovilpatti, S. Seethalakshmi and party from Chennai, Swapna Sen and party from West Bengal and Paramasivan Rao and party from Kanyakumari. The performances tomorrow (July 14) will be at the Book Point Auditorium from 9.00a.m. The artistes include Selvaraj and party from Chennai, Ramachandra Rao and party from Tirunelveli, Muthu Lakshman Rao and party from Theni, Lakshman Rao and party from Kovilpatti, Durairaja Rao and party from Madurai. THIS one's for students interested in architecture and design. Dakshinachitra organises a career exploration camp focussing on architecture and related fields like conservation, preservation and design. The two-day seminar (July 19 and 20) will be conducted by leading professionals like Benny Kuriakose, Ranjan Nambiar, Christina Nambiar and will consist lec-dems, assignments to study one of the South Indian regions represented at Dakshinachitra, developing observational, analytical, and creative interpretational skills.
