SAUNDARYALAHARI, or billowing waves of beauty, which evokes Shankaracharya's magnificent verses to the goddess, is also the name of an art and craft store that will open this week in Indiranagar in a street lined with gulmohars. This little shop has artworks in copper, brass and wood, as well as unusual craft objects including jewellery. There are also samples of handcrafted designer furniture on display. All of these varied creations come from one source: sculptor C.V. Ramesh. Owned and managed by Jayan Krishnan and Kala Ramesh, Saundaryalahari is at 375, 100 Ft Road, H.A.L. 2nd Stage, Indiranagar. Phone 5282290 or e-mail saundaryalahari@vsnl.net for details (including scanned images of samples).

DON'T be alarmed when you hear of a troupe presenting "Filth" on stage. It's the group Black Coffee with Irvine Welsh's script adapted for the stage by Harry Gibson. With one actor playing 33 characters, "Filth" promises to be "quite a mind trip". It is a merciless exploration of the psyche of a corrupt policeman, Detective Superintendent Bruce Robertson, who is a divorcee, an alcoholic and a bigot with an inferiority complex. Welsh and Gibson have created a truly complex and disturbing character, and have, through his eyes, laid bare the dark underbelly of urban life and loneliness. Preetam Koilpillai directs the play that stars Rajeev Ravindranathan. At the Auditorium, Alliance Française, on July 17, 18 and 19 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets available at Café Paradis (AFB) and the Super Market (Brigade Road).

NOT many movie fans are aware that Bangalore's very first multiplex, called simply Innovative Multiplex, is up and running. Although it opened with a bang with "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle", it isn't going full throttle as yet, for only three of its four screens are ready. Each auditorium has 320 seats with the latest in sound and projection. You'll miss the grand sweep of the 70 mm screen, though. Innovative, which is at some distance from the heart of the city, plans to lure viewers through "a complete entertainment package" including a food court, shopping and games. The ticket prices (Rs. 70 and Rs. 90) are surprisingly low for a multiplex, and soon, there will be even cheaper afternoon student shows every day. A small, 90-seat theatre is being constructed in the basement, which can be hired for private screenings. Innovative is situated at 135, Outer Ring Road, Varathur Hobli, Bangalore South. It is very close to the Marathahalli junction of Airport Road and the Outer Ring Road, and it can also be approached from Whitefield, Old Madras Road or Hosur Road. For directions and details of movies and show timings, call 5225944 or 5225945.
