Amartaya Sen speak

SHANKER CHAKARAVARTY

WHEN Nobel laureate, Professor Amartaya Sen, set out to accept an open debate on the issue of secularism in the country, he did so with the Gujarat riots in mind. Prof. Sen said that development planners, businessmen and others ought to take "an adequately broad view of development".

Professor Sen added that there was absolutely no empirical evidence to suggest that democracy slowed down growth.

Pointing out the phenomenal economic growth of some Asian countries, Professor Sen said the reason for their economic success was inclusion of policies for economic competition, use of international markets, spread of education and land reforms and none of these "was inconsistent with democracy."
