Pandit Ravi Shankar & Ustad Zakir Hussain

THIS was music to more ears than one. When sitar maestro PANDIT RAVI SHANKAR and tabla wizard USTAD ZAKIR HUSSAIN decided to team up, the event created history of sorts. The duo had not been seen at a concert together for the past 15 years but finally managed to get their dates on schedule.

Ravi Shankar, who was more than delighted to play with Zakir Hussain said, "I used to perform with Zakir's father Ustad Allarakha and I remember him falling asleep in his father's lap during long rehearsals." He said that the concert was aimed at amalgamating past music with present day melodies "with both reflecting India's undying musical spirit".

Zakir Hussain, who had recently organised a concert in memory of his father, said that his father had changed the face of percussionists in India adding that he had influenced an entire generation of artistes.
