For stylish interiors

Minimalist, contemporary and trendy. The Design Store that has recently opened in Chennai specialises in eco-friendly furniture and home accessories.

The Design Store brings a new idiom to indoor elegance and `less is more' lifestyle of Chennaiites. Minimalist, non-fussy and tres contemporaire. Suggestive of global design trends are furniture forms created by Tessaract which fuse wrought iron, rubber wood, leather and cane in sleek configurations with a touch of geometric drama, neat lines and an occasional curve. Add the Industree's exquisitely crafted home accessories collection in natural fibres, and you have the ideal one-stop shop for those driven by eco-friendly, designer savvy homes and offices.

At `The Design Store' (32, C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Ph: 4997157) inaugurated recently by Vyjayanthimala Bali, the daffodil and white interiors set off the minimal statement of the furniture forms, sometimes touched with Van Gogh yellow, wild orange and ultramarine blue.

Sofa sets with neat lines and centre tables stun with their structural design. Hopper clear glass and bronze glass dining tables with vibrantly string chairs, Soho chest of drawers and contemporary elegant beds are engineered to follow the philosophy of `form following function', with aesthetic designs. And the same philosophy obtains in the rather lovely chrome and powder coated arc chairs, and the very elegant Portal and Penny chairs.

Complementing the visual language of the interiors and the furniture are the meticulously crafted natural fibre and grass mats, runners, blinds, cushions, bins, boxes and mats. In bright orange, fuchsia pink, yellow, ultramarine blue and emerald green.

The split, full and fine river grass runners, mats and floor coverings in vivid shades charm with their warm, fresh glow and workmanship. The flaming bright colours of the screw pine boxes, bags and mats make them a perfect foil for understated interiors, as do the textured plain leaf and banana fibre home accessories. And the commingling of natural fibre handbags with leather and plastic brings an innovative touch to the accessories. Industree sources the fibre items from women groups through NGOs, trusts and co-operatives.

Adding to the special designer touch is the sleek cutlery of the `Magpie' collection and smart stainless steel tableware. And very soon cotton, jute and hemp dhurries and Jaipur's blue pottery home accessories will be added to the store's repertoire, along with kitchenware and bar accessories in contemporary metal as well as imaginative products for the home in glass, wood and metal designed by AKA.

For Gita Ram, linking Tessaract furniture to Industree's natural fibre accessories "came naturally''. All this at affordable prices too! Makes it so much easier to walk out of the store with something you just can't bear to leave behind.
