Joyous sound of music

It was an evening of spontaneous music by children at a recent show by Vocalz in the city. A report...

The performers were happy and carefree, absolutely natural and at home on stage. The audience was as much part of the show as the artistes. Naturally, as the participants were children, part of the Vocalz group. The show was organised as part of Vocalz' second anniversary. Proceeds from the show went towards charity.
The 40 children, in the age group of four to 14, dressed in bright costumes, sang and danced without any inhibition or stage fear. And as they compered the show, the children displayed a rare clarity of thought and expression.
The hat dance set to "You Are My Sunshine", a popular number, was an instant hit as was the tribal dance performed by the boys.
The stage was then taken over by the older children who sang numbers that ranged from "Ave Maria" to Backstreet Boys, with Harry Bellafonte, Peter Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio thrown in. "Top of the World" was impressive. The curtains came down with a fantastic dance to Gypsy Queen - Volare, which was a refreshing change from the present-day rap or break dances.
What was amazing was the confidence with which the children took the stage, never really requiring any prompting from the adults. The show was organised by Krishna Iyer of Sing Along fame. Nataraj on the piano, Davidson on drums and Benjamin on the guitar provided instrumental support.
Vocalz, which aims at initiating children into the world of music, is now all set to welcome Christmas...
