For a good cause

TUBERCULOSIS IS still perceived as fatal and difficult to control, let alone eradicate. Though it is a killer if left untreated, advances in medicine and the general networking of those working towards its cure, prevention and hopefully its eradication, it is something that can be treated effectively and is completely curable. But because of a lack of awareness and will to continue the medication, that is so easily available, thanks to the efforts of the Government and the NGOs, the disease still takes a big toll. It, therefore, needs urgent tackling, also keeping in mind that India bears one third of the world's TB burden.

In this context, REACH (Resource Group For Education and Advocacy For Community Health) is doing yeomen service to create awareness about major public health problems with special emphasis on tuberculosis. Its Advocacy for Control of TB (ACT) project has been launched to address this problem and works with the private sector healthcare deliverers, NGOs and industry to get them to participate in the Government's efforts to control TB using the DOTs (Directly Observed Treatment) method.

As part of the strategy towards creating awareness, a special screening of Mira Nair's film, "Monsoon Wedding", is being organised today (November 29) by REACH in association with Sumit Patodia of Events. At this special show for the well-wishers of REACH, a presentation on TB will be made drawing attention to the disease that affects all strata of society.
