A lip-smacking variety

It's a fare for the entire family at Rangoli, the new Gujarati restaurant at T.Nagar. It offers a delicious and authentic thali that is sure to attract food buffs.

It was a big family gathering from the thatha to kutti pasanga; the whole lot was there. So were the cameras to capture the mood.

While the thatha savoured every spoon of his thayir sadam, the rest nibbled the starter that looked like cauliflower fry. I hope by now you have guessed the setting of such a gathering.

Woodlands, Dasaprakash, Sangeetha or Saravana Bhavan? Now the food, what would such a group order?

A combination of dosas, rotis, some North Indian gravies and maybe even Chinese for the more adventurous?

The setting of the family gathering was Rangoli, newly opened Gujarati restaurant of the Hotel Saravana Bhavan (HSB) Pondy Bazaar, T. Nagar. To think that just five to six years ago, dal and paneer butter masala or mutter paneer comprised the entire culinary range north of Vindhyas to us! Chennai today boasts of exclusive Gujarati, Rajasthani and Punjabi eateries, not to mention the sundry food festivals held often featuring cuisines from Kashmir to Konkan.

At present, Rangoli has only the thali (Rs.120), but the management has plans to include a la carte dishes too. It is a sumptuous thali, starting with one farsan (fried savoury), kachoris and dhokla served with sweet and green chutneys. Though the dhokla wasn't up to the mark, the kachoris were good.

Monday's menu had two dals, kadi, a vegetable makhanwala, turia sambaria and a batata or aloo dish.

Of the lot the spinach-capsicum dish, turia sambaria was the best. The dals, moong and toovar, and the makhanwala were tasty. The srikhand, one of the sweets on the menu, that night was superb.

To mop up the gravies there were rotis, poori and thepla. Kichadi and plain rice too were available. Since the thali is an unlimited one, even the nth helping of curries, staples or sweets are possible. Not a bad deal, eh?

Tastefully done decor and friendly service are the added attractions of Rangoli.
