Guardian of the homeless

At Little Drops in Koluthuvanchery, off Chennai, aged destitutes can hope to make the best of their twilight years. A peek at the home and its forthcoming fund-raiser programme.

STARTED IN 1991, Little Drops Charitable Trust situated in Kalluri Salai, Koluthuvanchery has been making a big difference to the lives of many an aged destitute. The name is inspired by Mother Teresa's famous statement, "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is only a drop in the ocean, but if that drop was not in the ocean, friends, would not the ocean be less by that missing drop"?
With Selvaraj Bovas as the managing trustee, E.J.Paul as the co-founder, trustee Pradeep Daniel, 20 dedicated staff and a huge team of volunteers, the trust has been providing free shelter, food, clothing and medicines to 118 old men and women living in the home. It also runs a school up to third standard for children of the nearby villages. At present, there are 175 students in the school. The destitute home admits the aged irrespective of their physical condition and caste or religion. It has an in-house critical care centre, where the ailing and those with contagious diseases are provided special care in isolation.
The financial needs are taken care by donations, both in cash and kind. It also approaches school managements to request students to help collect money for the noble cause. Contributions to Little Drops are exempted from Income Tax. People are welcome to visit the home and spend time with the inmates.
The inmates are kept busy with activities like cleaning, gardening, cooking, paper cover making etc.
Little Drops organises an annual entertainment programme, which will be held on December 22 this year, to raise funds. Many companies come forward and sponsor the event.
The Trust has plans to expand its activities — an orphanage and a clinical lab for the financially weak, but awaits generous support and whole-hearted service from people. For details call 4767763.
