Sporting a sleek look
THE INVITATION to the Tata Open Ball was from Simone Tata. The occasion — a preview of the latest pret-a-porter collection of Westside. A touch of elegance to the grit, guts, glory of the players from across the globe seemed to be the inspiration behind this new range — combining white with citrus yellow, beige and pearl, silver greys, lagoon blues, navy and brick, culminating in severe but chic midnight blacks.
One of the fashion bigwigs, Wendell Rodricks displayed great ingenuity with the sleek and stylishly carefree cuts for the Spring 2002 Collection.
Five sequences were displayed by the models, each line showcasing the deft handling of the baffling variety of fabrics — crepes, satins, raw silk, ribbed polys, window weaves, linen, brush and crispy cottons, chiffons and crinkles. Rodricks had crafted not only with an eye for aesthetics but feeling the pulse for practicality as well. There was plenty of choice in the designs — loose flowing, crisp kurtas and lounge pants, figure hugging ribbed blouses, crinkle crepe loose tops, tie-ups, spaghettis and tank tops. Also in are straight long skirts with sneaky slits combined with pull-on kurtas. For menswear, the accent was on open collared loose shirts and kurtas or Chinese stand-ups partnered with cargos. While the day wear was kept bare and simple with just a few lines of stem stitch embroidery, embossed reeds or roughed out seams for garnish, the evening wear in darker shades were trimmed with just the right amount of twinkle with beads, crystals and sequins. A truly ready-to-wear collection.
The mood for the evening was set by the versatile Ash Chandler, who sang soulful romantics and indulged in some mimicking too. A charity auction of sports memorabilia conducted by Vijay Amritraj, reaped a rich harvest with a T-shirt autographed by the winning French Davis Cup team fetching as much as Rs 1 lakh. The proceeds went to Sankara Nethralaya.
