Designer with a cutting edge
Modern life demands that comfort and style come together. Fabrics that feel good and perform in any situation and styles that pamper the body are today's fashion mantra.
Sailing with the trend, yet claiming a special place for herself in Chennai's fashion firmament is Erum Ali. At an exhibition of salwar suits and kurtis, the young designer has conjured up styles ranging from cool to cutting edge.
The fabrics are wispy crepes, chiffons and airy cottons, while the styling is elegant and structured. The cropped kurtas are teamed with straight pants offering a curious mix of peppiness and grace. Embroidered accents give the pants a distinct look. In some creations, the embroidery is elaborate up to the waist and subtly exposed with slits.
Moving away from the preponderance of white and black, Erum's couture takes on glorious colourations. Brights are in, and so are florals, she asserts. Flaming orange, magenta, rich maroons, sunny yellows... the colours are origami-inspired. While she emphasises on traditional craftsmanship (as is evident in the exquisite Kashmiri, shikaragah and aari work), she has also responded to changes on the embellishment front with inventive flair. Check out the creations that are artistically dusted with sequins.
The display that comes with attractive discounts is just right for those shopping for big styles with small pockets. Designer kurtas in rich textures and painstaking craftsmanship are priced Rs.1,300 onwards. The cotton range, created as a prelude to another scorching summer, comes with cool prices.
Catering for a clientele that includes top-notch cine stars and corporate personalities, Erum plans the launch of Glitterati, her exclusive trousseau line, next month. "Each creation will be one of its kind," she adds. Meanwhile, Erum is all set to launch her collections through clothes and crafts outlets at the Taj Group of Hotels. That's not all. "Made to Measure" is yet another innovative project scheduled for commencement on January 20. Through this, the dynamic designer would offer the fashion conscious impeccable tailoring and custom-made suits. Now, who said designer clothes are only for those with washboard stomachs and never-ending legs?
The exhibition-cum-sale at 38, North Boag Road, T.Nagar, phone 98400-89898/8241644 is on till January 19.
