A healthy career option
SWAMI SIVANANDA (1887-1963) was a doctor before he decided to take to sanyas. In 1957, Vishnudevananda, his favourite disciple was sent to the West to create an awareness about yoga. Thus came into existence the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres with branches worldwide to impart yoga training.
The graceful surya namaskar is the perfect warm up exercise, shavasana cools the body, while pranayam and other asanas relieve
the body of all illnesses. Combining yoga, diet and meditation, the Sivananda Yoga Centre tries to instil physical and mental discipline. At the Chennai centre on the 7th Main Road, Tiruvalluvar Nagar, as well as at other centres, training is imparted for those aspiring to become yoga teachers. There are advanced training courses for the purpose and those interested in taking it up seriously are later sent as instructors to the various Sivananda yoga centres.
Indian culture, arts, Ayurveda and heritage tours are all part of the training. Summer yoga camps for children are held regularly at Neyyar dam in Kerala, Uttar Kashi and also abroad. Besides asanas, Vedas, Vishnu Sahasranamam and bhajans are also taught.
After Quebec, Austria, Bahamas, New York, Grass Valley, California, a new centre is coming up in France for which voluntary service in carpentry, plumbing, electrical works, gardening, cooking, computers is invited. With a strict regimen of no alcohol, no tobacco, no drugs and vegetarian diet fitness is guaranteed.
The Swami's aim is to inculcate the spirit of selfless service in youngsters fit mind in a fit body.
